some comments from other professionals in regards to headshots

comment 1
If price is the main concern, you can find a “budget” photographer.  This can be good for the pocket book, and in some cases, can yield fantastic results. But in many cases, you may end up regretting it.
The fact that the photographer charged so little for their services was a sign they may not value their own work and experience highly enough to charge a reasonably rate.

comment 2
If you’re extremely lucky, like to take risks, and can actually find someone who is truly skilled at taking photos and knows how to get the best from the people they work with then hiring a professional may not matter, but if you are less adventurous and serious in getting great headshots, don’t gamble.  In our competitive world, any advantage you give yourself over your competition is huge.

comment 3
Find a photographer you believe you will be comfortable shooting with. This comfort can make a difference in the way the headshots turn out.

comment 4
Choose a photographer whose portfolio demonstrates that they can take quality, professional looking headshots done in a style that you really like.

comment 5
A good make-up artist can help hide flaws and accentuate features , but headshots should be a realistic  representation of “you”, not a glamourized version. You should look good, but without it being obvious you’re wearing make-up. It is very important you actually look like your headshot. The more the headshot looks like you, the better the headshot. If you feel comfortable doing your own, then you probably don’t need a make-up artist.

Headshots should take nothing away from you, no distracting backgrounds, angles, cityscapes, etc.  The photographer with distracting backgrounds is more interested in clever shots than in capturing your face.

comment 7
Know exactly what is included in your session and all the prices

comment 8
Make sure you are groomed... hair, nails, etc. and ready for your session to get the images you want to represent yourself.  Remember you want your headshot to look like you when you go to castings.

comment 9
Don't be tempted to ask to be made to look different than who you are. Casting has to be able to identify you as the person in the photo. Light retouching to remove a blemish or to clean up a little under the eyes or clean up messy hair is ok.

comment 10
Remove jewelry, no necklaces, bracelets or watches. No sunglasses.  Give the photographer some outfits to choose from.
